NEW DELHI: In a bid to help build better translation systems, Facebook has open-sourced FLORES101, a first-of-its-kind, many-to-many evaluation data set covering 101 languages from all over the world. For the first time, researchers will be able to reliably measure the quality of translations through 10,100 different translation directions — for example, directly from Hindi to Thai or Swahili. For context, evaluating in and out of English would provide merely 200 translation directions. The FL ORES-101' tool ‘ enables researchers to rapidly test and improve upon earlier multi-lingual translation models like M2M-100'. ‘ "We're making FLORES101 publicly available because we believe in breaking down language barriers, and that means helping empower researchers to create more diverse (and locally relevant) translation tools — ones that may make it as easy to translate from, say, Bengali to Marathi as it is to translate from English to Spanish," Facebook said in a statement. FL ORES-101' focuses ‘ on what are known as lowresource languages, such as Amharic, Mongolian, and Urdu, which do not currently have extensive data sets for natural language processing research. The data set contains the same set of sentences across all languages, enabling researchers to evaluate the performance of any and all translation directions. "I think (FLORES) is a really exciting resource to help improve the representation of many languages within the machine translation community," said Graham Neubig, Professor at the Carnegie Mellon University Language Technology Institute in the School of Computer Science. "It is certainly one of the most extensive resources that I know of that covers so many languages from all over the world.” added. In a research report focused on India, the investment banker said that after moderating for two quarters and moving closer to RBI's target, the CPI inflation will likely accelerate in the coming months. "We expect it to rise to 5.7 per cent in May from 4.3 per cent in April. The 140bp increase in headline CPI will likely be driven by the combination of a low base effects and a broad-based sequential increase in prices across major CPI components," Barclays said. ANI UAE-based Indians cancel summer holiday plans DUBAI: Several United Arab Emirates (UAE)-based Indian expats have either cancelled or put their summer vacation plans on hold in the fear of getting stuck amid Covidinduced travel curbs, a media report said on Monday. The Khaleej Times report said the period between June to August are usually peak travel times for Indian expatriates, as they coincide with school summer holidays. "However, uncertainty over the ongoing suspension on incoming passengers from India, as well as the intensive vaccination campaign for teenagers in the UAE, are primary reasons for the low demand," the report said citing travel agents and expats. MAY CPI INFLATION TO REACH 5.7 PER CENT Raheesh Babu, general manager of Musafir.com, an online travel agency, said: "Peak travels to India are closely tied with school holiday seasons. In this case, the UAE has announced a robust vaccination campaign for students aged 12-15. Parents are concerned that, if they travel over the summer, their children might miss their vaccination schedule. "Due to this, there is a high chance that school students may have to return to campus in September. "Since the travel situation to India is highly volatile, residents are avoiding the trip because they also fear getting stranded." Babu added that the agency has already received several cancellations on bookings. The UAE had first suspensied incoming passenger traffic from India on April 24. It was later extended on May 4 by the UAE's National Emergency Crisis and Disaster Management Authority (NCEMA) in light of a deadly second wave of Covid-19 currently affecting India. The new URL http://incometax.gov.in replaced the long-existing http://incometaxindiaefiling.gov.in and was launched late evening, officials in the tax department said. The website will take sometime to stabilise and allow taxpayers to use all the features smoothly, they said. The home page of the new website said the "e-filing 2.0" is an "all new portal with features that make e-filing easier for you!" "The portal has been developed as a mission mode project under the national e-governance plan. "The objective of this portal is to provide a single window to the income tax related services for taxpayers and other stakeholders," it said. The Central Board of Direct Taxes (CBDT), which frames policies for the tax department, had on Saturday said the new website will be launched on Monday, but features like the online tax payment system and a mobile app will be activated only on June 18. The new portal is integrated with immediate processing of Income Tax Returns (ITRs) to issue quick refunds to taxpayers, and all interactions and uploads or pending actions will be displayed on a single dashboard for follow-up action by the taxpayer. This service is especially for those who could not perform the post-death rituals including Asthi Visarjan and 'shraddh' of their loved ones who died during the pandemic. Those who avail the new facility will also be able to view the rituals live. Postmaster general of Varanasi region, Krishna Kumar Yadav, said: "Many lost their dear ones to Covid, but could not perform their last rites. Now, ashes can be sent through speed post to these holy cities by intimating the postal department." He said that people will need to register themselves on the portal of Om Divya Darshan for 'asthi visarjan' or 'shraddh' ceremony on the portal. The ashes can be placed in a packet and sent by speed post to Varanasi, Prayagraj, Haridwar and Gaya. The 'asthi' packet should be neatly packed.
