"I am resigning from the party as there is violence in my state, I am grateful to my party that it sent me here. I am feeling suffocated that we are not able to do anything over violence in the state," said Trivedi, while making the announcement on the floor of the Upper House. "I will continue to serve the people of Bengal but my soul tells me that if you can't do anything sitting here, then resign," said Trivedi. Reacting to the resignation, Trinamool Congress leader Sukhendu Shekhar Ray said that now a grassroots worker can be sent to the Rajya Sabha. An old associate of West Bengal Chief Minister and Trinamool supremo Mamata Banerjee, Trivedi was once regarded as her right hand man. The former Union Railway Minister was instrumental in Mamata's initial days when she split from the Congress and formed her own party. He was a regular and popular face of the party in Delhi. But as the clout of the state leaders grew, he was gradually marginalised. "We are keeping a close watch on the extradition of Tahawwur Rana. We are trying for his extradition as soon as possible. In an update, his court hearing will begin on April 22, 2021," MEA spokesperson Anurag Srivastava said in a weekly briefing. Rana was rearrested in Los Angeles on June 10, last year on an extradition request by India. that the state government has also issued toll-free numbers to help the workers affected by the Uttrakhand tragedy. He stated that the search for workers of the state is going on with the help of the Uttrakhand state. While referring to news related to making labourers of Jharkhand captive by a company in Tamil Nadu, the CM said that exploitation of the workers was going on in an organized manner. NEW DELHI: Lower food prices, especially those of vegetables and cereals, dragged India's sequential retail price inflation lower in January 2021. Sequentially, the Consumer Price Index (CPI), which gauges the retail price inflation, declined to 4.06 per cent from 4.59 per cent reported for December 2020. Besides, the data furnished by the National Statistical Office (NSO) showed that CPI Urban declined to 5.06 per cent in January from 5.19 per cent in December. The CPI Rural fell to 3.23 per cent last month from 4.07 per cent in December 2020. As per the data, the Consumer Food Price Index decreased to 1.89 per cent last month from 3.41 per cent in December. The CFPI readings measure the changes in retail prices of food products. Meanwhile, India's industri- al production grew by 1 per cent in December, official data showed on Friday. According to the Index of Industrial Production (IIP) data, the manufacturing sector output grew by 1.6 per cent in December 2020. Mining output declined by 4.8 per cent, while power generation grew 5.1 per cent in December 2020. The IIP had grown by 0.4 per cent in December 2019. Industrial production has been hit due to the COVID-19 pandemic since March last year when IIP contracted by 18.7 per cent in the month. MORE ON BUSINESS NEW DELHI: The government on Friday strongly objected to the misinformation in media and its amplification on social media on the disengagement of Indian and Chinese troops, currently underway in Ladakh after Congress leader Rahul Gandhi claimed India has ceded territory to China. China and India on Thursday began their synchronized disengagement along the Line of Actual Control in eastern Ladakh, bringing to an end the nine-month-long stand-off between the two Asian giants. However, some sections of the media have claimed that India has ceded the territory between Finger 3 and 4 in Pangong Lake area, over which the face-off had triggered between the two sides since last year. In a statement, the Ministry of Defence described this assertion that Indian territory in Ladakh is up to Finger 4 as "categorically false". Reiterating that the factual position has already been clearly communicated by the Defence Minister Rajnath Singh in his statements to both Houses of the Parliament. Setting the record straight, the ministry said the territory of India is as depicted by the map of India and includes more than 43,000 sq km currently under illegal occupation of China since 1962.
